La Réunion is experiencing a widespread and progressing chikungunya epidemic with over 4,000 new cases reported in one week. The island has recorded its first two deaths related to the outbreak. 15 serious cases were reported and emergency room visits are up. Health authorities recommend prioritizing vaccination for seniors, adults with comorbidities, and mosquito control workers. The Minister for Overseas France plans to visit the island in early April.
